Useful tips to avoid incidents
- Bypass the herd as much as you can
- Signal your presence when getting close to a herd not to surprise the dogs
- Stop when one or several dogs come forward barking (they have a poor sight)
- Your pet should be on the ground, leashed.
Let the guard dog and your pet meet together.
If aggression, leave the leash, don’t take your dog in your arms and don’t take action. - You may take your child in your arms, calmly, showing absolutely no sign of panic
- If you are cycling, get down of your mountain bike
- Take off your backpack from your shoulders to untighten them and put an object (bag, hat) between the guard dog and you, under no circumstances should you use a stick,
- Please make sure you are not aggressive towards the dog with wooden sticks, pepper sprays or stones. Every move or gesture when being close to the herd shall be done softly and slowly.
- Facing the guard dog is recommended with your arms along your body and your eyes not looking at its eyes. Calmly talking to the guard dog, remaining peaceful will be appreciated. The guard dog may then come as close as 1 or 2 meters/3 or 6 feet to smell you.
- Once the guard dog is reassured about your intentions towards the herd, bypass it, making a detour to avoid going towards it. It might then escort you up until you are far away from the herd it is protecting
